Variation 6

ID 5282

The ability to switch between playing on the string to playing off the string is important in many styles. A good example is the opening of Josef Suk’s ‘Appassionata’ where we swap from on the string to spiccato quavers.

To help with the change from on the string to off the string, try playing the détaché notes (on the string) with flatter bow hair, then as you lift the bow to play the spiccato quavers, let the right arm lift slightly and use the side of the hair.

Practice the bow stroke on open strings before adding the string-crossing action and then finally add the left hand.
